Yo, "Hands"!
I started reading your book and so far I'm about 50 pages into it. It's great! The wildest thing is that, no "witz"!, you and I share SO many similarities when it came o our respective youths! Everything from schulplatter (sp?) as a kiddie to coveting Oma's old records (Will Glahle, etc, most of which I have in my collection) to the old stereo unit that plays 78-rpms (I also have an old one, not from Oma but from another elderly "aunt" who has since passed away, at MY house)! Even the old neighborhood you and your Oma had their houses in....neighborhoods which eventually fell into relative decay....sounds similar to where my folks house was and Oma's house used to be (though in the northeast, not Detroit). The similarities between us as I've read them thus far are striking, no joke. Sounds like you progressed further on accordion than I did....what is it about Germans and having their kids learn to play accordion?....but to this day I have a small "kid sized" unit as well as a full sized one in my closet. As far as siblings go, my sister was born in '68. Wow. By the way, have you thought about donating a few copies to one of the local historical societies ad/or libraries that are in those areas you grew up in (I'm sure they'd appreciate the offer for their collection)? Bravo!

The Little Grownup is magical. This book is beautifully written, colorful and incredibly nostalgic. Jeff encapsulates a time period in America and it is wonderful to see it through the eyes of a man reminscent of his childhood. This is the true America.....a land glowing with opportunity and hardship at the same time.....where everyone has a chance to create a beautiful life. Just amazing Jeff. Although I could have read this book in a day or two, I read a few pages, a chapter, every night before I went to sleep. I could smell the land, see the cars, hear the accents and feel the smiles. I slept very well
You are a brilliant writer Jeff, and thank you for crossing paths with me.

I will order the book soon. I was born and raise in Ohio but moved to Michigan in 1976 with my family. It is sure nice to meet people who are from Michigan and now I live in Tucson, AZ. Jeff my mother would like to write a book perhaps you can give her details.

This is a delightful book, written by someone who obviously cares about his family and treasures the great memories of childhood. Not enough stories about those wonderful grandparents though as I could have kept reading! Incidentally, I spent a lot of my youth just north of Jeff's hometown, and even though I was a generation ahead of him, we shared some of the same adventures: the beautiful lakes, Greenfield Village, the milk deliveries, and the wonderful variety of ethnic cuisine in any Michigan town of decent size! Loved the pictures by the way. Thanks, Jeff, for taking the time to share such childhood joy with just the right touch of mischief here and there. And best wishes to your family, those still with us and all those who have gone on to wait in the other heaven!

"The Little Grownup" rekindled the memory of what it was like to experience a "true" childhood. For those of us who grew up in the 1970s, we came at the tail end of an era that's long gone by. Jeff's detailed memories paint the perfect picture of an innocence we fondly embraced around traditional family values. Not only will this book be a remembrance to older generations, but an inspiration to the young who'll see how we found happiness at time when today's technology was called science fiction.
